Equine Metabolic Syndrome

Description:
A disorder with the inability to regulate blood insulin levels

Causes:
Certain breeds are predisposed to equine metabolic syndrome. These breeds are typically seen as easy keepers. Studies show there may be a genetic component predisposing the breed.

Clinical Signs:
Cresty neck, fatty deposits, laminitic episodes, obesity

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) has three main characteristics obesity or fatty deposits in certain areas, particularly the neck, insulin resistance (IR) and laminitis in horses and ponies.
